Spring Cleaning Means Gadgets Too

It's spring cleaning time and you may be surprised by all the gadgets that New York Times editor Sam Grobart says you should toss.

“These are all things we used to have to buy and maintain,” said Grobart, a personal technology editor. “And now you just buy a smart phone and you can pretty much do all that."

For one, the point-and-shoot camera. Grobart says they are becoming less useful because they only do one thing -- take photos.

Not only do smart phones take pictures, they can also record video. Grobart also predicts that the camcorder will be a thing of the past.

But right now, customers still seem to want them. Shoppers at a Best Buy in Union Square recently were browsing for both still and video cameras.

"They still have very advanced features that you might not get from a smart phone or a tablet," said Sy Paulson, Best Buy manager.

There’s also a lot of talk about whether or not you should keep your cable, because there is a lot of programming available online. But if you are a sports fan or a news junkie, then it pays to keep cable.

Grobart also says you can toss the USB thumb drive, the GPS unit (many smart phones have GPS applications), digital music players (you can use your phone) and even the desktop computer.

“The trend is towards netbooks, laptops, and tablets. The desktop computer might just fade away,” he said.
