TLC Data Reveals Best, Worst Neighborhoods for Cab Tips

Whether it's during the week, at night or rush hour, Washington Heights fares are likely to be the most generous, doling out 25.3 percentage tips

Cab riders in Washington Heights are the best tippers in the city, those in posh Manhattan nabes are the stingiest and cabbies looking for the best tips on Saturday nights are most likely to find them in Brooklyn, according to a new analysis of taxi credit-card tips.

The Taxi and Limousine Commission analyzed credit-card tip data by neighborhood over a week in January, breaking down the data by average overall, rush hour and Saturday night tip percentages, according to The New York Post.

Passengers headed to Brooklyn on Saturday nights are likely to pay far above the average, the data indicated. Some of the high tippers told the Post that's what they have to do in order to get cabbies to take them to the outer boroughs.

In fact, eight of the 10 top-tipping neighborhoods for Saturday night drop-offs are in Brooklyn. Prospect Heights tops the list, averaging 21 percent tips compared with 18.6 percent citywide on Saturdays between 10 p.m. and midnight.

During the weekday rush hour, cabbies are likely to get the best tips in midtown, where passengers shell out 22.2 percent credit-card tips on average. On weekdays overall, though, the average citywide tips is 19.1 percent and cab riders in Manhattan's wealthiest neighborhoods like SoHo, Gramercy and Battery Park City tip below that.

And whether it's during the week, at night or rush hour, Washington Heights fares are likely to be the most generous, doling out 25.3 percent tips.
