Gunfire Hits Bystanders on Busy Bronx Sidewalk Near Subway: NYPD

A gunman opened fire near the entrance of a busy subway station in the Bronx Monday evening, hitting two innocent bystanders, police and witnesses say.

A 20-year-old woman was walking near East 179th Street and the Grand Concourse in Morris Heights when she was struck at about 6:30 p.m., police said. A 63-year-old man working at a fruit stand was also shot in the leg.

Surveillance video obtained by NBC 4 New York shows a woman pushing a stroller behind her child, who's wearing a bookbag. Seconds later, people start running and women by the subway entrance duck for cover.

Another woman is seen crawling on the ground, writhing in pain after being shot in the leg. A man takes off his shirt and tries to stop the bleeding as a deli worker runs outside and tries to console the victim.

No one realized the 63-year-old fruit stand worker was hurt for at least 15 minutes after the first ambulance arrived.

"Every day he's here," said neighbor Betsy Medero. "It's a terrible thing."

The two victims were taken to St. Barnabas Hospital in serious but stable condition.

Witnesses who did not want to go on camera said the gunman, who's still on the loose, fired at least four times from the street in to the crowd, in the direction of the busy subway entrance.

No arrest has been made. Police are investigating but it appears at this point the victims were not the intended targets.
