Temperatures Warm Up for the Weekend, But Icy Mix of Snow, Rain May Complicate Monday's Commutes

An icy mix of snow and rain is expected to follow a weekend warm-up in temperatures that has potential to make travel hazardous during Monday's morning and evening commutes, according to Storm Team 4.

The weekend temperatures -- highs of 37 and 40 degrees, respectively, forecast for Saturday and Sunday -- are a welcome reprieve to tri-state residents who have been grappling with sub-freezing temperatures and harsh wind chills that have made it feel like the teens outside.

After a relatively dry day Saturday, light snow, along with ice and rain, is expected to begin falling across parts of the area Sunday afternoon. Precipitation will become steadier over the course of the day. The wintry mix continues Monday morning before turning to mostly snow in the late afternoon.

Monday's high temperature is expected to reach 36 degrees.

Current models don't indicate the storm will be particularly strong, Storm Team 4 says, but the system may carry enough moisture to dump as much as 1 to 3 inches of snow and ice on the five boroughs Monday, and up to 6 inches of snow on areas north and west of the city.

With three consecutive days of above-freezing temperatures, it's unlikely the storm will bring any significant snow accumulation, Storm Team 4 says. Icy conditions will be more problematic.

Lingering flurries are expected Tuesday with temperatures near 40 degrees. The mercury is expected to drop back below freezing Wednesday amid mostly sunny skies.
