Brooklyn Marine Dies in Afghanistan

A Marine from Brooklyn died this week of wounds he sustained in Afghanistan, Pentagon officials said Tuesday.

Lance Cpl. Jabari N. Thompson, 22, died July 17. He was wounded on July 13 while conducting combat operations in Helmand province, Afghanistan, defense officials said. 

Thompson was a machine gunner assigned to 3rd Battalion, 2nd Marine Regiment, 2nd Marine Division, II Marine Expeditionary Force, in Camp Lejeune, N.C.  He joined the Marine Corps in January 2008 and was promoted to lance corporal in March, 2009.

Thompson had previously served on a mission to Haiti and was deployed to Afghanistan in February, 2011. 

"Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and loved ones," Marine officials said in a statement.

His awards include the Marine Corps Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Afghanistan Campaign Medal, Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal and Global War on Terrorism Service Medal.

His funeral arrangements are not yet known.
