Mural Depicting ‘Junior' With Angel Wings Unveiled in the Bronx

A new mural was unveiled Sunday to remember and honor 15-year-old Lesandro "Junior" Guzman-Feliz who was killed in a gang attack at a Bronx bodega in an apparent case of mistaken identity. 

The mural in Belmont is called "Stand With Junior" and it shows a picture of the teen wearing a Yankees jersey with angel wings and just to the right even more angel wings. The point of the mural is for people to stand with Junior taking on his own wings to serve as a reminder to end the community violence. 

Hundreds gathered in the same church where mourners said their final goodbyes to Guzman-Feliz just days before. Afterward, 48 of Guzman-Feliz's closest family and friends gathered at the Bronx where he was killed. The number represented the 48th Precinct where Guzman-Feliz wanted to be a detective. 

The crowd marched from the bodega to the new mural that took all night to finish.

“Hopefully, with things like this in the neighborhood, even little kids can not only see something sad that happened but be inspired," artist Chris Pyrate said.

Pyrate left the mural incomplete for one reason -- to invite Guzman-Feliz's friends and family to complete it by painting the light on 48 candles at the bottom. 

Guzman-Feliz was killed earlier this month after he was dragged out of a bodega and killed by a mob of men. The owner of that bodega broke his silence for the first time last week, tearfully explaining what happened that night in his own words. 

Guzman-Feliz was laid to rest following an emotional funeral last week. Eight suspects have been arrested in his killing, six of them in New Jersey. All will face charges of murder and other crimes. Seven of them will be in court on Monday.
