Man Set Fire to Ex's Apartment Twice in 2 Days: Cops

A Bronx man has been arested after setting fire to his ex-girlfriend's apartment on Long Island early Tuesday morning, his second time doing so in two days, police said.

Patrick Mitchell, 43, was charged with two counts of second-degree arson and second-degree burglary.

Nassau County Police said Mitchell first went an ex-girlfriend's apartment on Gaffing Place just before 6 a.m. Monday and set a fire to the front door. Responding firefighters put out the fire, which caused damage to the hallway and door.

At 4 a.m. Tuesday, Mitchell returned and again started a fire in the same location, authorities said. An alarm alerted investigators and Freeport police and firefighters.

The fire was again extinguished, and police located Mitchell at the Freeport Long Island Rail Road station, where he was arrested.

Mitchell is scheduled to be arraigned Wednesday in Hempstead. It wasn't clear if he had an attorney.
