Grandmother to Get Prison in Fatal Beating of 4-Year-Old

Angela Barksdale will be sentenced to 15 years in the 2009 beating death of her grandson

The Bronx grandmother who beat her 4-year-old grandson to death at her apartment two years ago has been sentenced on a conviction of first-degree manslaughter.

Angela Barksdale, 48, is expected to receive 15 years in prison with five years post-release supervision when she is sentenced in December, the Bronx District Attorney's office said Thursday.

Barksdale admitted to beating her grandson, Kevion Shand, on Feb. 19, 2009, at the Metropolitan Avenue apartment where she lived with Shand and his 2-year-old sibling, according to prosecutors.

The child sustained the fatal head injuries when Barksdale took him into the bathroom after he relieved himself and soiled his clothes, prosecutors said. Barksdale carried the boy into the living room, dressed him in nightclothes and left him lying on a sofa.

Two days later, Barksdale called 911 to report the child not breathing. When emergency responders arrived, the child's body was found in an advanced state of decomposition, said prosecutors.

Barksdale has waived her right to appeal the conviction.
