“Orange Is the New Black” Star Danielle Brooks to Make Broadway Debut in “The Color Purple”

Danielle Brooks, known for her breakout role as Taystee in Netflix’s hit series "Orange Is the New Black," will make her Broadway debut this fall, playing Sofia in the revival of the 2005 musical, “The Color Purple.”

Brooks joins Oscar winner Jennifer Hudson and London star Cynthia Erivo, who will also be making their Broadway debuts in the production, as Shug Avery and Celie, respectively.

Based on Alice Walker’s Pulitzer Prize winning novel — and the 1985 novel of the same name — “The Color Purple” features music and lyrics by Grammy winners Brenda Russell, Allee Willis and Stephen Bray.

The revival comes from director John Doyle, who first opened this production in 2013 at London’s Menier Chocolate Production.

Previews for “The Color Purple” begin Nov. 9 at the Bernard B. Jacobs Theatre. The opening is set for Dec. 10.
