Stray Bullet Hits Boy, 7, inside New Jersey Home: Police

A 7-year-old boy was struck and injured by a stray bullet while inside his home in Paterson, New Jersey, police say.

The bullet was fired amid a barrage of gunshots from outside the home and went through a window of the child's home before it struck him in the shoulder, police and neighbors said.

The boy was taken to St. Joseph's Medical Center where he was listed in stable condition.

Investigators in the Passaic County Prosecutor's Office do not believe the child was the intended target, but further details were immediately unclear.

No suspect has been identified.

An employee at a liquor store across the street told NBC 4 New York neighbors immediately ducked for cover when they heard the gunshot ring out.

"We all got down," said Julio, who declined to give his last name. "When they run like that, you know they're shooting."

A young boy who spoke to NBC 4 New York with his mother's permission said he was going to see his aunt when he heard shouting and four to five shots.

"My mom took me inside and told me what happened," said the boy.

The shooting happened on the same street where a 12-year-old girl was fatally struck in the head by a stray bullet as she rode her scooter. Three men were arrested in the July 2014 death of Genesis Rincon; police believed the gunman was aiming at someone else when Rincon was struck in the head.

Monday's shooting happened less than 100 feet from where Rincon was shot.

"It's never going to change," said Julio. "Not yet."

The city of Paterson is about to face a government shutdown amid a budget fight, but police and other emergency personnel are working as normal, the mayor's office said.
