Equipment Stolen From Long Island Boy Scout Troop: Police

Police are looking for the thieves who stole more than $1,000 worth of camping equipment from a Long Island boy scout troop just weeks before the scouts were set to make a big trip.

Authorities said that the thieves stole tents, propane lights and tanks and cookware from a storage trailer behind the Middle Island Presbyterian Church in Ridge sometime between Oct. 2 and 10.

Scout Leader Bill Langan said that he discovered the theft just before a troop meeting. He said that the boys had worked for four years to raise money to buy the trailer and its contents.

"I don't believe it," he said.

New eagle scout Tom Hart, meanwhile, called the theft a big blow to a growing troop.

Others -- including a Girl Scouts troop -- have reached out to the troop to help them replace the stolen equipment before the trip.

Anyone with information about the thefts should call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-220-TIPS.
