Boy, 13, Sets Girl's Hair on Fire at Long Island School: Police

A 13-year-old boy ignited the hair of a female student Friday morning at a Long Island school, police said.

The incident occurred at about 8 a.m. at the William Paca Middle School in Mastic Beach. A teacher extinguished the fire in the hair of a 14-year-old girl, according to Suffolk County detectives.

The girl declined medical attention and went home with her parents, according to the school's website, which described the incident as an assault but didn't mention that the girl's hair was set on fire.

The boy, whom police didn't identify because of his age, was arrested, detectives said.

"Rest assured, the William Floyd School District has zero tolerance for this type of behavior and we will continue to work closely with the police to prosecute this individual to the fullest extent of the law," the school district said on its website.

About 1,500 students attend the middle school.
