NYC Restaurant Begins Selling ‘Bleeding,' Lab-Created Veggie Burgers

New Yorkers can be among the first to taste a veggie burger that tastes -- and bleeds -- just like ground beef.

Momofuki Nishi in Chelsea unveiled the so-called "Impossible Burger" -- a lab-produced, plant-based meat burger -- and plans to start selling them for $12 apiece.

The burgers are made with plant-based proteins and fats that are engineered to look and taste exactly like a ground beef patty.

The Impossible Burger will also cook just like a regular patty, meaning diners can get them cooked anywhere from rare to well-done. And if a diner likes a rare burger, it'll "bleed" just like a beef patty thanks to a molecule found in both plants and the blood of animals.

David Chang, the head chef at Momofuku Nishi, told Eater that he had heard about the burger about a year ago and wanted to try it.

"It was something new that I had to get behind," Chang said.

The burger, which was created by Impossible Foods, should be an appealing option for people who enjoy meat but want to lessen the impact of eating it. And according to early taste-tests, it's hard to determine which patty was ground beef and the other was plant-based.
