Black Smoke in Sky Startles New Yorkers

The sight of black smoke rising in the sky briefly startled onlookers in Manhattan Tuesday.

Photos posted to social media shows heavy smoke coming from the Upper Esat Side.

The FDNY says it was coming from a fire on the roof of a building at 53 East 83rd St., which is listed as The Jesuit Street residential building on the ground of the Church of Saint Ignatius Loyola.

The fire was knocked down a short time later. It's not clear what caused the blaze.

The Loyla High School and Saint Igantius Loyla Elementary School, near where the fire broke out, were evacuated as a precaution and 600-plus kids were sent to Regis High School on East 84th Street.

A News 4 reporter whose children attend the schools there says construction has been going on on the roof of the Loyola School, as well as other parts of the building.
