A new $50 million ferry terminal for trans-Hudson service to Battery Park City opened at 6 a.m. morning.
It will provide ferry service between lower Manhattan and parts of New Jersey and Westchester and Rockland counties. The ferry is expected to transport 25,000 people a day to and from Manhattan.
The new terminal has five ferry slips, a 22,000-square-foot waiting area and separate gangways for arriving and departing passengers.
It replaces a nearby existing ferry terminal that opened in 1990.
The Port Authority owns the new terminal, but it will be operated and maintained by BillyBey Ferry Company which contracts ferries operated by NY Waterway Taxi.
NY Waterway, which transports riders to Manhattan from Hoboken, Weehawken and other New Jersey ports, said it had a 12-percent drop in ridership from a year ago and that revenue has been declining since the fall.
