Bicyclist Struck, Killed on Long Island: Police

A bicyclist was killed in a motor vehicle crash on Long Island Wednesday morning, police say. 

The bicyclist was riding southbound on Washington Avenue in Brentwood when he rode in front of a 2002 Ford Escape that was going eastbound on Express Drive South at about 7:45 a.m., Suffolk County police said. 

The car struck the 22-year-old cyclist, who was airlifted to Stony Brook University Hospital where he was pronounced dead, police said. 

The victim has been identified as Amilcar Mejia Alvarado of Brentwood.

The 36-year-old driver stayed on the scene and was not hurt, police said. The vehicle was impounded for a safety check.
