Man Allegedly Torches Van in Estranged Wife's Driveway

Richard Johnson, 47, is accused of setting fire to a van in his estranged wife's driveway

A man was arrested on Long Island Friday after he allegedly set his estranged wife's vehicle on fire.

It happened at about 3:42 a.m. in Baldwin, according to Nassau County Police. The 46-year-old victim had parked a 1996 Dodge van in her driveway for the night when 47-year-old Richard Johnson allegedly went to set the fire.

He was seen carrying a gas container as he approached the vehicle, which belonged to the victim's sister, and attempting to start a fire, police said. He then fled on a bicycle.

Responding firefighters and police extinguished the fire, which caused substantial damage, according to authorities. After an investigation, Johnson was arrested at his home.

Johnson was charged with third-degree arson and also has an open warrant for trespassing from the village of Hempstead, police said.

He was arraigned Saturday. Attorney information was not immediately available.
