New Jersey Town Weighs Ban on Baggy Pants for Boardwalk

Wildwood officials are considering a dress code that would also require a shirt and shoes

A Jersey Shore town is considering rules that would require visitors to pull up their pants, put on a shirt and wear shoes while on the town's boardwalk.

The proposed regulations are in an ordinance scheduled for a vote in Wildwood on June 12.

The baggy pants measure requires the waistband of pants, shorts, swimsuits and skirts to be no lower than 3 inches below the waist to prevent the exposure of skin or underwear. Shirts would be required between 8 p.m. and until 5 a.m.

"We get an inordinate amount of complaints about it and we’re going to say, 'Hey look, Wildwood doesn’t want you to not have a good time but we want you to pull your pants up,'" Wildwood Mayor Ernie Troiano Jr. said.

Violators could be fined between $25 to $100 for a first offense, and up to $200 beyond that.

One beachgoer said the proposed rule spoils the spirit of the boardwalk.

"We're down here having fun, so let 'em sag," said Mike Brown.

Another said the dress code was a good idea.

"Kids should not be dressing like that, you know, with their underwear and everything else hanging out," said Charmaine Murray.
