Baby Boy Hit by Stray Bullet While Sitting in Family's Parked Car Released From Hospital

A New Jersey baby struck in the face by a stray bullet while sitting in his family's parked car has been released from the hospital and is expected to recover fully.

The 1-year-old boy, Mina Beshay, was in the backseat of his family's car around 2:30 p.m. Saturday in Jersey City when a gunshot shattered a window and struck him. His 5-year-old sister and their father were also in the vehicle but weren't injured.

The boy underwent surgery Saturday night to remove a piece of a bullet and glass from his face.

He was released Monday.

Michel Beshay, the boy's father, said he wanted to "thank God for everything."

The child's uncle said the boy's condition is improving, but he is still in pain.

No arrests have been made and authorities are still working to determine what prompted the gunfire.

The shooting has left the family dismayed by street violence in Jersey City. The family called on the mayor to take measure to end the violence.

Jersey City Mayor Steven Fulop responded that the city will "continue to hire additional officers and deploy more officers on foot patrols, but the challenge is daunting without larger changes to the overall system, such as restricting access to guns by criminals, more witnesses willing to testify and breaking the cycle of criminals returning to the street quickly after violent crimes."
