Baby, Mother Dead in Suspicious Blaze

A gasoline can was found next to the baby's crib.

A Bronx man was arrested Wednesday on charges of killing his wife and baby girl, then pouring gasoline around the apartment before setting it on fire.

Vincente Cordero, 34, was charged with murder, arson, assault and reckless endangerment in connection with the early morning fire inside the Fordham Heights apartment.

Authorities say they responded to the blaze around 8:30 Wednesday morning and found Kety Sanchez, 30, in a bedroom with stab wounds to the the torso and severe burns.  The couple's one-year-old girl, Keiry Sanchez, was found dead in her crib, face down, with a gasoline can nearby.

Cordero was found in the living room, police said.  He was in critical condition at Westchester Hospital.

The couple have two other children who were not in the apartment and were not injured.

A neighbor woke up to screams and rushed to help.

"The old lady was screaming, 'Fire, fire fire!' so I went to her apartment to help her," said the unidentified Good Samaritan, who lives next door.

When the neighbor rushed inside the flaming apartment, he found a little girl inside and tried to help her, he said.

"When I get inside there was a lot of fire, a lot of fire," the young man said. "I tried to help her. There was a man inside screaming, 'Help,' too, with a little girl but I can't do nothing."

Officials said another woman, believed to be the child's grandmother, was found alive in the apartment.

Fire marshals and police were still investigating.
