A Darien woman is dead after the car she was driving went airborne early Sunday morning and crashed through two homes in Darien.

The woman was speeding down Hollow Tree Ridge Road near Linden Avenue around 1:30 a.m., according to police, when her BMW left the roadway.

The car crashed through a house at 126 Hollow Tree Ridge and passed through a first-floor bedroom, then hit a tree, went 7 feet into the air and hit the chimney of 122 Hollow Tree Ridge before landing on its side in the kitchen, said police.

The road was closed for 11 hours while officers investigated the accident. The driver, who police have not yet identified, was transported to Stamford Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

Investigators said the crash caused severe damage to both homes and the Noroton Heights fire department had to demolish the remaining portion of a chimney at 122 Hollow Tree Ridge due to the severe hazard it presented.

No one in either of the homes was injured. The driver was taken to Stamford Hospital, where she later died.
