Stranger Tries to Snatch Infant from Mother's Carrier: Cops

A man attempted to snatch an infant from its mother at a Long Island park Tuesday before a bystander jumped in fight off the stranger, authorities said.

The mother was walking with her baby in a carrier across her chest, along with another child, on busy Nassau Road across from Centennial Park in Roosevelt, according to police. A man approached and tried to grab the infant from the carrier.

A bystander who witnessed the incident told NBC 4 New York he rushed to help as the mother fought off the stranger, and chased off the man.

The man may have been mentally impaired, authorities said.

Nassau County police are canvassing the area and interviewing neighbors.

The would-be abductor is described as between 35 and 40 years old, about 6 feet tall with a thin build.
