Man Arrested in Gunpoint Stairwell Rape of Woman on Coney Island

A 31-year-old man has been arrested for allegedly following a woman into the elevator of her Coney Island apartment building, then grabbing her when she got off and raping her at gunpoint in a stairwell, according to police.

Police say Raji Wilson was arrested Wednesday, three days after the attack.

Authorities had said he attacked the 20-year-old woman from behind as she got out of the elevator around 9 p.m. Sunday. He showed a gun and forced her into the stairwell, where he raped her and stole her cash and keys.

The suspect then fled down the staircase, authorities say.

The woman was taken to a hospital for evaluation.

Wilson was also charged with robbing a 46-year-old woman after following her out of the elevator of a Coney Island apartment building about an hour after the first attack. In that case, Wilson allegedly forced the victim to get on the ground at gunpoint, then went through her pocketbook. It wasn't immediately clear if the robbery was in the same apartment building as the rape.

Wilson faces charges of rape, robbery, criminal sexual act, criminal possession of a firearm and assault, as well as a state parole violation. It wasn't clear if he had an attorney who could comment on the allegations.
