Arrest Made in Long Island Park Machete Attack: Source

The New York State Park Police have arrested one unidentified person involved in the May 23 attack

An arrest has been made in connection to the stabbings in a Long Island park last month that left three teens injured, a law enforcement source told NBC 4 New York.

New York State Park Police have arrested one unidentified person involved in the May 23 attack in Hempstead Lake state park, though more suspects are believed to be still at large.

The three teens were walking on a trail alongside the softball and lacrosse fields at Hempstead Lake State Park shortly after 3 p.m. when several youths accosted them, stabbing three of the teens, officials and a law enforcement source said.

A law enforcement source said at the time of the stabbings there were at least six attackers and all were believed to be members of the MS-13 gang. Some attend Hempstead High School, they said.

One attacker might be as young as seven years old, the source said.

One of the attackers had a machete and one had a knife, according to the source.

At least one teenage victims was stabbed and left in critical condition, according to the source. The other three teens had minor injuries.

Law enforcement sources said the ambush appears to be gang-related.

The park frequently hosts recreational youth leagues, and one softball coach arrived Monday to find the area swarmed by police.
