Armed Man Shot by Cop He Was Trying to Rob: NYPD

An 20-year-old man was shot by an NYPD detective he was attempting to rob at gunpoint Sunday evening in Brooklyn, police said.

The suspect was among three men who approached the plainclothes detective at about 6:40 p.m. Sunday near the intersection of Monroe Street and Bedford Avenue in Bedford-Stuyvesant, investigators said.

The man brandished a gun as he confronted the detective, who fired his gun, striking the man in the right arm and torso, police said. The gun was later identified as a BB gun.

The man was taken to Kings County Hospital, where he was said to be in stable condition.

Investigators said the man's BB gun was recovered.

Another detective nabbed a 16-year-old boy who was among the trio involved in the attempted robbery, but the third youth escaped, police said.

Three detectives were in the neighborhood investigating a scam in which victims were being lured there by a Craigslist ad for rental apartments and then robbed. It's unclear whether the three suspects involved in the shooting are linked to the scam.
