Armed Man Draws Cops' Attention by Smoking a Joint: NYPD

A Brooklyn man was busted Saturday afternoon with burglary tools and a handgun after he drew the attention of passing patrol officers by smoking a joint in front of an apartment building, police said.

Plain-clothed officers were on patrol when they spotted a man, later identified as 22-year-old Tristan Murray, smoking marijuana next to a black BMW parked in front of a fire hydrant on Bedford Avenue, police said.

When the officers stopped their car, Murray dropped the joint, police said. As he started to run, he pulled a handgun from his waistband and tossed it under a nearby vehicle, the officers said.

One officer chased Murray on foot along Bedford Avenue. When Murray turned onto Albemarle Avenue, the officer in the unmarked car cut him off.

The officers returned to the scene and found a .32-caliber revolver loaded with six rounds under the car parked next to Murray's BMW. A search of his car revealed the burglary tools, they said.

Murray was charged with second- and third-degree criminal possession of a weapon, criminal tampering, possession of burglary tools and marijuana and possession of a forged Illinois driver's license, police said.

There was no information indicating Murray had a lawyer who could comment on the charges.
