NYPD detectives are looking into allegations that erstwhile congressman Anthony Weiner traded sexually explicit messages with with a 15-year-old girl, authorities said.
The inquiry comes two days after a DailyMail.com story where a teenage girl claimed that Weiner asked her to undress and touch herself in online text and video exchanges earlier this year.
Federal prosecutors also opened a preliminary investigation into the claims on Thursday and have issued a subpoena for the former politician's cellphone and other records, a source familiar with the matter told NBC 4 New York.
The U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York had no comment on the case Thursday.
In its story, published Wednesday, The Daily Mail posted screen grabs of texts provided by the girl, whose identity it didn't disclose. The outlet reported she told a father and teacher about the exchanges in the spring.
Weiner, who resigned from Congress in 2011 after revelations he was sending sexually explicit messages to multiple women, said on Wednesday that he was the victim of a hoax.
Weiner is married to Huma Abedin, an aide to Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton. The couple have a 4-year-old son. Abedin announced she was separating from Weiner last month after revelations he had sent more sexually charged messages to another woman.
Weiner unsuccessfully ran for mayor in 2005. He made another bid for mayor in 2013 and was leading several polls until it was revealed he had continued his questionable behavior after his resignation from Congress. He now works as a pundit and consultant.
His failed 2013 mayoral bid is the subject of the documentary "Weiner."
