Alleged Video-Game Killer's Mom Says Son Is Sick in the Head

Manhattan man charged with killing a 9-year-old New Jersey boy says her son has suffered from mental illness for about a decade, according to his mother.

Antonia Morales said that 25-year-old Alejandro Morales has been treated for schizophrenia, said the New York Times.

Morales says her son told her on Christmas Eve that he wanted to kill someone. She says she tried to calm him and get him to return to a Brooklyn halfway house.

Anthony Maldonado, of Palisades Park, N.J., was stabbed early Saturday while visiting a Harlem housing project, reports have said that the violence broke out over a video game the older man was playing with the boy, but the suspect's mother doesn't believe that.

"I don't know what happened with my son, but it was not about a video game," Antonia Morales told the Post.

In August, he was charged with punching a man in Manhattan.
