Tri-State Has More Air-Traffic Errors Than Other Regions

Newark's airport ranked the worst in the region

Air-traffic controllers monitoring airspace in the tri-state area make mistakes at more than twice the national rate, according to a published report.

The New York Post analyzed government data and found that New York City-area controllers make one error per 40,000 flight operations, which is more than double the national average of one error per 84,000 flight operations.

Newark Liberty International Airport has the worst rate among the region's three major airports, with one error out of every 28,000 flight operations. John F. Kennedy was the second worst with one per 49,000 flight operations.

The mistake rate in the New York City area is also higher than controllers in other big cities.

Atlanta's rate is one error out of 56,000 operations. Chicago's is one out of every 53,000 operations, the paper said.

The data encompass three groups of controllers: those in the airport towers, those who handle flights as they approach and depart and those who monitor planes at high altitudes.

According to the Post, the most errors occur among the second category in the New York area.

The Federal Aviation Administration said it has increased its vigilance of controller errors by encouraging them to report mistakes.
