500 Cars Unclaimed After Sandy to Be Auctioned in NY

More than 500 vehicles unclaimed after Hurricane Sandy will be auctioned off in New York.

Many of the vehicles were flooded or badly damaged after the storm last fall. The city is working with the auction house David R. Maltz in Central Islip on Long Island. Company vice president Richard Maltz says they are advertised on the company's site as flood-damaged cars.

Buyers need a 25 percent deposit in cash or a bank check. He says the proceeds will go to the city's coffers, except for a 10 percent premium for the auction house.

The auction starts in May.

The city towed approximately 3,300 storm-damaged vehicles out of the emergency areas after the storm. They created a separate hotline for residents and returned all but the 535 that will be sold.
