A-Rod Returns Home for MRI, Will Sit Out Second Straight Game

Derek Jeter is also out with a bruised knee

The New York Yankees are prepared to play a second straight game without third baseman Alex Rodriguez and shortstop Derek Jeter, both of whom are nursing injuries.

Rodriguez returned to New York on Monday to have an MRI exam on his sore left thumb and planned to join the team in Boston on Tuesday. Yankees manager Joe Girardi said the MRI "came out good," but that A-Rod might not be ready to play in the opener against the Red Sox.

Jeter has a bruised right knee, an injury that occurred Saturday in the first game of a split doubleheader against the Orioles. Jeter missed the second game and was not in the starting lineup.

Girardi said Jeter "healed up pretty good" and that the shortstop would be available "in case of an emergency."
