Monthly Metrocard for $104?

The MTA is hoping to avoid these fare hikes

As nbcnewyork.com first reported weeks ago, if the MTA's worst-case scenario budget is passed the cost of a monthly Metrocard will climb to over a hundred dollars.

In an Independent Budget Office report commissioned by the Straphangers Campaign, the agency looked at what will happen to fares if the MTA is forced to pass a budget next week that contains no help from Albany or taxpayers.

The report confirms our previous assessment that a monthly (30-day) card would jump from $81 to $104 while a weekly (7-day) card would go from $25 to $32. Similarly big hikes would come at LIRR and Metro North.

The MTA is hoping to avoid these fare hikes with help from Albany but the agency's budget is due before the end of the year and the Legislature will almost certainly NOT act by then.

Still, because it takes at least 6 months to implement any fare hikes, the MTA hopes that Albany will eventually act and allow the fare hikes to be reduced to more "reasonable" levels.
