Water Pipes Burst in NJ City for Second Time This Week

Eight water main breaks were reported in Elizabeth, New Jersey, Thursday morning, the second time in less than a week that pipes have burst in the area.

A valve regulating water that flows from Newark to Elizabeth was shut off Thursday after the breaks, New Jersey American Water told NBC 4 New York. An uncontrolled flow of water from the valve caused pressure to build and ruptured the aging pipes, authorities said.

On Tuesday, eight other pipes burst in the area, authorities said.

Area residents told NBC 4 New York Thursday that water flowed into their basements and that their house water was turned off after the breaks.
