Teen Arrested in Shooting of 5-Year-Old N.J. Girl

Child remains "critical" after shooting

Cops cuffed a teenager in connection with the shooting of a 5-year-old girl at a city housing complex in Jersey City, police said.

Police arrested Demitrius Thompson at about 1:40 p.m. Thompson does not have an arrest record as an adult, but he does have a juvenile record, authorities said. Officials also recovered a weapon.

The victim, meanwhile, remains hospitalized in critical condition.

The child, whose name was not released, was struck near her throat just after 10 p.m. Friday at the Montgomery Gardens complex. She was taken to Jersey City Medical Center, where she remained Saturday morning, but further details were not disclosed.

Lt. Edgar Martinez, a police spokesman, said details about the shooting remain sketchy, and a possible motive has not been determined.

The housing complex, an area plagued by criminal activity, is near the St. Peter's college campus.

The investigation is ongoing.
