Driver Charged in Hit-and-Run That Killed 5-Year-Old Crossing Brooklyn Street: NYPD

The driver of a minivan allegedly involved in a hit-and-run that killed a 5-year-old boy crossing a street in Brooklyn with his mother Sunday evening has been arrested, police say.

Rashard Charles died after being hit by the car on Empire Boulevard in Crown Heights about 8:30 p.m., according to the NYPD.

Charles and his mother were crossing the road in the middle of a block when they were hit by by a double-parked minivan backing into the roadway, police said.

The boy and his mother were both knocked to the ground and the child was pronounced dead at the hospital.

Police say the driver, 23-year-old Elizabeth Mayard, left the scene after hitting Charles. She later returned and was charged with leaving the scene of an accident involving death, reckless driving and other traffic offenses.

It's not known if she has an attorney.
