5 Rescued From Long Island Sound After Paddle Boat Capsized

7-year-old boy, four others rescued by police divers

Police say five people, including a 7-year-old boy, were rescued from the Long Island Sound after their paddle boat capsized.

Riverhead police say the group was fishing Sunday evening in the waters off Wading River when a wave overturned the small boat.

Police divers, a police aviation unit and a local boat owner responded to the scene after police received several calls of people yelling for help in the waters just east of the Town of Riverhead Beach.

Two men wearing life jackets were pulled out of the water first. Two women and the boy were located a short time later sitting atop the overturned paddle boat. Only the 7 year old was wearing a life jacket.

Police say no one required medical attention.
