3 Workers, 2 Police Officers Injured in New Jersey Construction Accident: Police

Police responded to the scene in Bayonne at about 9 a.m., authorities say.

Three contractors and two police officers were hurt in a mishap at a construction site in New Jersey Wednesday morning, utility officials said.

PSE&G contractors were installing a new gas main at Goldsborough Drive and Chosin Few Way at about 9 a.m. when three of them were hurt.

Officials with the utility said they were checking the main with air at the time of the accident, and there was no gas flowing through the main at the time.

Two cops were also taken to the hospital after the incident. It's not clear if they were hurt during the accident or while responding to the site.

The extent of the injuries for the five people who were hurt was not immediately available.

Chopper 4 footage from the scene shows a vacant lot near a three-way intersection. Several trucks, police vehicles and at least one excavator are parked there, and the intersection is roped off with yellow tape. There appears to be a hole underneath the excavator.

PSE&G says it is investigating the accident.
