A Michigan architect built the oversized model 40 years of ago of the soaring skyscrapers that would become the 110-story World
Trade Center.
The buildings have been gone from New York City's skyline since the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks. But a detailed architectural model has resurfaced, passed from Michigan to a foundation to the Sept. 11 memorial museum.
A $160,000 restoration has replaced broken hand rails, and recreated dozens of tiny cars and human figures on the roads surrounding the complex. It's coated the exterior with a glassy, reflective sheen.
The model is on display this week at the National Building Museum in Washington.
It's headed next to the Sept. 11 memorial museum, donated to its permanent collection.
