Suffolk county animal welfare officials say a 3-foot-long alligator has been found in a park on New York's Long Island.
The alligator was found in an area where children play, in Lilly Pond County Park. Officials with the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals say the reptile couldn't have survived the cold weather.
A SPCA lieutenant donned protective gear and rescued the alligator from the water Saturday. It was transported to a wildlife rescue and appeared healthy.
The ASPCA says it was the latest reptile to be abandoned on Long Island. There have been seven other alligators, a Boa constrictor snake, a rattlesnake and an iguana also found.
