Man Kills Mother, Father, 3-Year-Old Niece: Authorities

A man who fatally stabbed his mother, father and 3-year-old niece in a house and then walked to a police station was arrested Tuesday, authorities said.

The triple slaying happened in Harrison, just across the Passaic River from downtown Newark, Hudson County prosecutor Edward DeFazio said. The man then walked a short distance to the police station, DeFazio said.

The victims' and the suspect's names weren't being released Tuesday pending notification of family. The little girl's mother was out of the country, DeFazio said.

Public records showed the property where the stabbings occurred was listed under the name Carlos Campos. Neighbor Antonino Vargas said he was friends with the father, whom he knew as Carlos and who he said worked as an auto mechanic in Newark.

"He was my friend," Vargas said of the father. "This is very sad."

Vargas said he worked construction jobs occasionally with the son, who he said also was named Carlos. He said the son seemed troubled and "no good in the mind."

Police cordoned off the block, near where Route 280 passes over the city. Crime scene personnel removed a body from the house on a stretcher.

Neighbors said they were stunned at the grisly news.

"I'm in shock, I'm in shock," said Gwendolyn Tapia. "I've lived here 10 years and this never happened."

The stabbing suspect was expected to make a court appearance Wednesday.
