3 Children Rescued After Canoe Blown Away From Shore in Long Island Sound

Three children fishing in the Long Island Sound were rescued after their canoe was blown away from the shoreline by strong winds Monday night, police said.

The children – a 12-year-old, his 10-year-old brother, and their 12-year-old friend, launched their canoe from Crab Meadow Beach in Northport to go fishing early in the evening, according to Suffolk County police.

As they paddled out, the wind became stronger and they were blown about a mile and a half offshore.

Two marine officers were on their routine patrol in the Long Island Sound when they discovered the children and determined they were unable to paddle back to shore against the 15 to 20 mph winds and 2-foot waves.

The officers brought them and their canoe aboard their police boat and returned them to the shore, where their parents were waiting for them.

The children, who were all wearing flotation devices, were uninjured.
