2nd Fungal Meningitis Case Reported in NJ

State health officials on Wednesday identified the second person suffering from the illness as a 57-year-old man from Cumberland County

New Jersey is reporting its second case of fungal meningitis tied to a potentially contaminated steroid.

State health officials on Wednesday identified the second person suffering from the illness as a 57-year-old man from Cumberland County, where the first case was also reported.

Health officials say patient No. 2 received a spinal injection of steroid medication July 12 at South Jersey Healthcare Regional Medical Center in Vineland. The medicine was from one of the lots recalled by a specialty Massachusetts pharmacy and tied to a national outbreak that has claimed at least 11 lives.

Officials say the man was contacted by South Jersey Healthcare over the weekend as part of its patient notification of those who got the steroid. He was seen Monday and admitted Tuesday.
