New Jersey will host the 2020 Donate Life Transplant Games, a multisport festival for people who have undergone life-saving transplant surgeries.

Officials made the announcement Tuesday.

The six-day event, which will take place July 17-22, 2020, will be staged in the Meadowlands sports complex area in East Rutherford and will include more than 20 competitions. It's open to living donors, organ transplant recipients and bone marrow, corneal and tissue transplant recipients.

The winning bid was a collaboration of local partners led by the NJ Sharing Network, the state's organ procurement organization that saves lives through organ and tissue donation.

Officials say 115,000 people in the United States are awaiting a life-saving transplant, including nearly 4,000 in New Jersey. Nationwide, 20 people die each day waiting for a transplant.
