200 Beds Destroyed in Rikers Fire

Fire officials say 200 beds were destroyed in a fire at Rikers Island Sunday night.

Inmates had to be evacuated after the fire broke out around 8:10 p.m.; the Daily News said it started in a heating unit of the George Motchan Detention center. The cause is under investigation.

There were no reports of injuries.

"As soon as the smoke was detected, everybody was evacuated quickly," said Sharman Stein, spokeswoman for the Correction Department.

Officials said prisoners were being housed in other areas on Rikers.
