Toddler Runs Into Street, Gets Hit by Truck on Long Island

A young boy broke free from his mother and grandmother and ran into a Long Island street, where he was hit by an asphalt truck, authorities and witnesses tell News 4.

The 3-year-old boy was with his relatives, who were on their way to Planned Parenthood, when he ran into Deer Park Avenue in Deer Park at 12 p.m. Wednesday, police said.

A good Samaritan picked the child up from the pavement and the boy was taken to Good Samaritan Medical Center in West Islip.

"The mother was screaming ‘God, please not my child’” Carlos Climaco said. “I just told her to pray, be calm, everything is going to be OK.”

The child suffered serious injuries but is expected to survive, Suffolk County police said.

The truck driver, from SLR Industries in West Babylon, passed a breathalyzer at the scene.

SLR Industries President Louis Labriola called the incident, "a terrible, horrible accident. Completely unavoidable."

The accident had left witnesses stunned.

"I saw the child run out from the side of the street directly in front of the truck,” Martin O’Shea, who was in a car directly behind the truck that hit the child, said. “He tried to stop, but couldn’t stop."
