Couple Killed, Others Injured, Including Firefighters, in Electrical Fire in Brooklyn

An elderly couple were killed and several injured early Saturday morning in an electrical fire in Brooklyn, fire officials said.

The fire was reported at about 5:45 a.m. in the East Flatbush neighborhood in a building with a ground-floor business and two floors of apartments above.

FDNY spokesman Frank Gribbon said that Lorde Kinard, 76, and Octavia Kinard, 71, died in the fire. It was not known how many people were injured or what their conditions were.

More than 100 firefighters responded to the blaze, which was under control at 6:15 a.m. Two firefighters suffered minor injuries and were taken to Cornell Medical Center.

Cellphone video shot by a neighbor shows flames shooting high into the air.

Fire officials said that a power strip in the dining room of the first floor of the building was the cause of the blaze.

There were no working smoke detectors in the home, according to the FDNY.
