Two people were killed when they got out of their disabled car on the Long Island Expressway and were hit by an SUV driven by an off-duty NYPD officer, police said Tuesday.
A 20-year-old man and 18-year-old woman died in the accident, which occurred at about 11 p.m. Monday in Old Westbury, Nassau County police said. The identities of the victims haven't been disclosed by police.
Two passengers inside the disabled BMW were injured, as well as the driver of the SUV, investigators said. Information about the extent of their injuries wasn't available.
Nassau Police said the BMW was going westbound on the L.I.E. when it hit a guardrail and was thrown across the lanes into the other side and slammed into a divider.
The car became disabled and its lights shut down, police said. All four occupants of the car got out, and as they were standing outside the vehicle, a 2016 GMC Yukon came around the curve, going westbound in the high-occupancy-vehicle lane.
It slammed into the BMW, as well as the driver of the vehicle, who was from Queens, and the 18-year-old passenger, who was visiting from upstate, police said.
The other two passengers of the vehicle, as well as the driver of the SUV, had minor injuries.

The highway was closed for four hours as police investigated.
Law enforcement sources said the GMC driver is an off-duty NYPD patrolman who's been on the job since 2005.
No charges have been filed in connection with the crash. The sources said no criminality was involved.
