Minnesota Man Fell Asleep, Suffocated Infant After Drinking 2 Dozen Beers: Documents

A Minnesota man is facing charges after drinking two dozen beers and falling asleep on top of his newborn, suffocating the 8-week-old boy to death, according to court documents.

Cory Neal Stucky, of Blooming Prairie, was charged with manslaughter and child endangerment in the boy's July 18 death.

Stucky, 30, told officers he fell asleep and woke up to his girlfriend in tears saying that the boy was not breathing, according to a criminal complaint.

He told officers he had not been drinking and was a heavy sleeper, according to the documents.

The baby's mother told police that the boy was born five weeks premature and that neighbors were over at their place the day before, according to the complaint. She said Stucky began drinking around 11 a.m. and that he finished at least 24 beers before 9 p.m. when he went to a local bar with friends. She said he returned around midnight.

Stucky's neighbors said in statements to police that Stucky was “tanked” during the course of the day. A neighbor said they had a shot of whiskey and a pitcher of beer while at the bar.

She told police she was trying to get the baby back to sleep around 1 a.m. when Stucky took the boy and said it was his weekend to get up with the infant, according to documents. He took the baby to the couch to feed him, while she returned to sleep.

She said she woke up the following morning and saw Stucky facing the back of the couch and one of her son's legs, which was white and cold, according to documents. She moved one of Stucky's arms to find the infant face-down on the couch. She started screaming and called 911.

An autopsy showed findings consistent with asphyxia.

The prosecutor's office had no attorney information for Stucky.
