12th Earthquake in 1 Week Rattles Connecticut: USGS

A magnitude 2.2 earthquake struck eastern Connecticut early Thursday, making it the 12th to strike in one week, according to the USGS.

The ground began to rumble in Moosup, near the Rhode Island border, at about 4:40 a.m. Thursday, the USGS says.

Earthquakes, centered in Plainfield, have rattled Eastern Connecticut every day for the last four days and 12 times since Jan. 8. Two earthquakes hit Plainfield on Wednesday -- a magnitude 2.0 at 6:33 a.m. and a magnitude 1.8 at 8:10 a.m.

Geophysicists are examining the area to determine whether eastern Connecticut is experiencing an “earthquake swarm,” meaning several earthquakes which occur in fairly quick succession.
