Central Park Peacock Flies Home After 5th Ave Roost

A peacock that camped out on a window ledge of a building at Fifth Avenue and 65th Street after escaping the Central Park Zoo Tuesday afternoon has flown back to its coop.

The colorful bird roosted on the ledge of the luxury building for more than 16 hours. it flew back to its Central Park home at about 6:45 a.m. Wednesday.

After the initial escape, witnesses took to Twitter Tuesday to post photos of the exotic blue-green bird, observing it was "chilling on the windowsill."

Central Park Zoo Director Jeff Sailer confirmed Wednesday the peacock flew safely back to its quarters, as zoo staff had expected.

"Our staff monitored the bird through the night, and at 6:45a.m., he flew back on his own," Sailer said in a statement. "The bird is now secured in the aviary. A thorough understanding of the peacock's natural behavior allowed for the successful planning of its recovery."
